Just how does love sound? This is the question asked in a new documentary by Mosi Films that follows the Canadian-Haitian jazz sensation, Jowee Omicil. Like other contemporary horn trailblazers, Jowee's music seeks to channel a personal, yet universal guiding philosophy. For Christian Scott it is *Stretch Music*, for Shabaka Hutchings it is the *Lifeforce of the Deep Mystery*, and for Jowee it is *BasH!*. "BasH! is sacred, it's a slogan, it's an invitation, it's love ... the essential love that nothing can quench" ... as an artist, Jowee exudes pure charisma whether he is playing on stage or speaking, able to use both words and rhythms to conjure connections out of thin air. These are traits he has shown time and time again in collaborations alongside the late greats Tony Allen and Roy Hargrove, as well as modern groups like BCUC who channel traditional and ritualistic African sounds. This documentary explores Jowee's heritage and vision, revealing him to be a remarkable saxophonist who is constantly toeing the line between patience and triumph, between remembrance and the present moment. Jowee steps out to the front of the stage, a soprano sax as his weapon of choice, and delivers urgent spiritual jazz imbued by cosmopolitan groove, Voodoo blues, funk trance and his own brand of love ... it is quite something to witness.
