- Summary:
- Hailing from Niger, Etran de l'Aïr recalls the musical genre Tamasheq. Introduced in the West some twenty years ago, this genre, still sometimes referred to caricaturally as Tuareg rock, has given rise to numerous groups and musicians including Omara Moctar aka Bombino, Toumast and the unique collective Tartit. Bolstered by the work of Christopher Kirkley via the label Sahel Sounds (an American company with a penchant for digital media and do-it-yourself), this genre, spanning countries as vast as Mauritania and Mali, is now enjoying considerable success – exemplified by Tinariwen, a group that won a prestigious Grammy Award. Impeccably aligned on the stage of Moods Club in Zurich, Etran de l'Aïr deliver a concert packed with magnetic chords. Consisting of Ibra Moussa on vocals, Ibrahim Abdouyale on electric guitar, and Mahmoud Ahmed Jabre on drums, the trio draw clearly on their West-African heritage. Their approach is disorienting, naturally referencing the Afro-American musical register which itself originates from this part of the continent. It's a gripping production, reminiscent of Martin Scorsese's excellent documentary series on blues. Yet, just like the New York movie director and music lover, Etran de l'Aïr don't confine themselves to reproducing cultural traditions, instead spotlighting a highly evolving body of work. The whole set is enthralling ... Vincent Caffiaux.
