Summary:
Thanks to their inherent cross-cultural element, musical collaborations are consistently rich terrain. Take, for example, the ties between American bluesman Taj Mahal's melodies and the musical heritage of Zanzibar, or, closer to home, the musical tapestry created by British singer Paul Weller in collaboration with an exceptional Syrian ensemble. The trio of Malian artist Ballaké Sissoko, Moroccan Driss El Maloumi, and Madagascan Rajery, all skilled in different plucked string instruments like the kora, the oud, and the valiha, exemplify this cultural exchange through their collective known as 3MA, a name inspired by the first syllable of their respective birth countries. Carrying forward the legacy of Jordi Savall, master of the viola de gamba, this trio graces the stage at Moods Club in Zurich with an exquisite musical repertoire. Ballaké Sissoko, who earned recognition from fellow musician Toumani Diabaté even before his collaboration with cellist Vincent Ségal, delivers a masterful performance on the kora. Oudist Driss El Maloumi complements the ensemble beautifully and provides some light-hearted commentary, while Rajery Valiha Rajery, a true virtuoso of the Madagascan bamboo zither known as the valiha, adds a mystical dimension to the ensemble. These intricately composed songs seamlessly weave their respective instruments and cultures together through musical dialogue. Shrouded in grace, the resulting performance embodies the soothing power of music on the soul. Highly recommended. Vincent Caffiaux.
