Summary:
The lifelong relationship between Joseph Haydn, father of the symphony, and student Ludwig van Beethoven, the man who would revolutionize it, is the dream of all pedagogues. Performing the music of these two musical giants, the Orchestre de la Suisse Romande and Jean-Guihen Queyras put their relationship on center stage. Starting with the overture of Haydn's opera Il mondo della luna and his Cello Concerto in C Major, we are immersed in Haydn's symphonic landscape which spanned the end of the baroque era into the classical. Lost and forgotten for over two centuries, this concerto is now one of Haydn's most successful works and played here by French cellist Jean-Guihen Queyras, we clearly hear the baroque stylings still present in Haydn's work at the time. The handing over of the reins of classical music between these two masters had a profound influence over the path of classical music. Beethoven's Fourth Symphony shows off the more dramatic side of the father of classical music – his fame soon overcoming that of his teacher. Kim Hunter.
