- Summary:
- Similar to the Georgian-born performer Khatia Buniatishvili, pianist Sofiane Pamart has cultivated a sleek and sophisticated image, and is well renowned for his open-minded approach. In addition to a carefully-honed dress code (here, he responds to urban stylistic canons with an oversized suit and a bucket hat), Pamart boasts a rich musical career, as evidenced by his talents as arranger for the very finest in French rap. However, to confine this young composer solely to the label of hip-hop is to seriously underestimate his artistic potential. Recorded at the Épée de Bois theater in Paris' Bois de Vincennes, during Piano Day (an event that originally took place on the 88th day of the year, a nod to the piano's 88 keys), Sofiane Pamart delivers a seamless performance. This is particularly true for "La Havane," a tribute to the brilliant artistic heritage of the Caribbean, "Medellin," a piece that evokes the incredible suggestive power of music, and "Le Caire," a track paradoxically devoid of Egyptian melodies (its title translates as "Cairo" in English) but whose lingering melancholy makes it one of the high points of this intimate performance. Vincent Caffiaux.
