- Summary:
- Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's Fourth Symphony is emblematic of 19th century Russian Romanticism, heavy with fiery passion mixed with a strong undertone of nihilism. This energy is the driving force of this performance by the New World Symphony Orchestra, led by Roderick Cox, a brilliant young conductor originally from Georgia, USA. The symphony is a four-movement work that oscillates between a sweet, undulating waltz and a whiplash-inducing brazen fanfare symbolizing the crushing descent of 'fate', the symphony's nickname. The exception being the third movement where Tchaikovsky plays with pizzicato, meaning plucked strings, which brings a curious bright pastoral energy back into the symphony. Like his fellow romantics, Rachmaninoff, Borodin and Mussorsgky, Tchaikovsky plays with emotional extremes, transporting the listener directly into the audible version of a Tolstoy novel. Kim Hunter.
