- Summary:
- It is at the Church of St. Thomas in Leipzig, where the remains of Johann Sebastian Bach rest, that the Dresden Chamber Choir and the Gewandhausorchester perform his Mass in B minor BWV 232. Composed from 1733 to 1749 (he was then Kappelmeister at St. Thomas Church), the Mass in B minor is made up of several of his earlier compositions. He reworked them by adding other texts, which fully changes the perspective of the work. This process is known as parody. The mass is interpreted with depth by the Dresden Chamber Choir, an internationally renowned semi-professional mixed choir composed of some forty singers, who dialogue with the soloists Christina Landshamer (soprano), Elisabeth Kulman (alto), Wolfram Lattke (tenor), and Luca Pisaroni (bass), with voices of great purity. The voices are wonderfully supported by the Gewandhausorchester, the main symphony orchestra of the city of Leipzig, with Herbert Blomstedt conducting. He conveys his fine understanding of the work and gives a spiritual and wise reading.
