- Summary:
- 1914 and many of Europe's finest composers find themselves caught up in the flurry of patriotism and national fervour, quickly joining up to fight. Those who survived were irrevocably changed. Ravel was a truck driver close to the front, Schoenberg trained soldiers and Berg was in active service. This captivating documentary by Andreas Morell, the first in the series Music, Power, War and Revolution, explores how the war impacted these men and their musical output. This film looks at works such as Ravel's Tombeau de Couperin and Berg's Wozzeck, pieces which almost certainly, would not have come to fruition, had it not been for the war. Morrel also touches sensitively on those composers, whose lives were so cruelly cut short. Interviews with historian Philipp Blom, pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard and conductor Sir John Eliot Gardiner make for a deeply insightful film. Rachel Rowntree.
