Summary:
Giuseppe Verdi's third opera, Nabucco, reveals much about the Italian composer. It was a triumph from its premiere in 1842 at La Scala in Milan. An opera in 4 acts with a libretto by the poet Temistocle Solera, it quickly became one of the composer's most performed works. Set in 586 BC, Nabucco, king of Babylon, holds the Hebrews prisoner in Babylon. From there, the famous choir Va pensiero, or Chorus of slaves, a lyric poem considered a hymn to freedom, is born. This lyric drama has parallels with the Austrian occupation of Milan at the time of it's writing, making Giuseppe Verdi a politically engaged composer. The orchestra and choirs of the Zurich opera, under the direction of Fabio Luisi, brilliantly perform this famous opera. Baritone Michael Volle as Nabucco, soprano Veronica Simoeni as Fenena, and Mezzo-soprano Anna Smirnova as Abigaille are outstanding in their roles. Not to mention the shimmering staging of Wolfgang Gussmann, which recalls the hanging gardens of Babylon thanks to an emerald green set and costumes. Rachel Welsch.
