Summary:
If some concert recordings can be deemed unmissable, then this one is surely among that crowd due to the musical intelligence deployed. What was in play? A form of contemporary improvised music on the edges of jazz, and works by Cage, Berio and Ligeti, through which the two pianists offer a game of mirrors and an original use of pre-prepared piano (with software that adds electronic effects to Benoît Delbecq's playing). A few words about the artists: Benoît Delbecq of France and Andy Milne of Canada (a student of Oscar Peterson and a former member of Steve Coleman's Five Elements) met at an American university in 1990. This concert extends the aesthetics of their 2008 album Where Is Pannonica? : a minimalist expression made up of small shifts, impressionist phrasing and rhythmic and percussive acceleration that evoke Duke Ellington or Mingus when playing piano. Philippe Lesage.
