Summary:
If Marvin Gaye and Curtis Mayfield had had a child together, it would probably have been Jalen Ngonda. The Washington native, with a sublime voice that veers between power and subtlety (and is always charged with pure emotion), continues the legacy of these sacred soul masters, bringing refreshing reinterpretations of The Beatles and The Beach Boys into the mix. Performing at La Cigale in Paris in March 2024, Jalen kicks off his set to a packed house with "Rapture," a track taken from his latest (and first) album Come Around and Love Me released by Daptone Records (the label responsible for the rise of Sharon Jones & the Dap-Kings, Charles Bradley and Thee Sacred Souls). This first track is all it takes for him to get the whole audience on his side. Spanning an hour and twenty minutes, he performs the rest of his album and a number of covers with incredible skill and emotional intensity. Ngonda is backed by some excellent musicians, including Vincent Chiarito on bass and Michael Buckley on piano, who both produced the frontman's album. Soft, groovy and powerful, Ngonda has Aretha Franklin in his voice, while Vincent Chiarito has James Jamerson in his fingers. The audience is receptive from start to finish, with roaring encores which range from blues à la John Lee Hooker to a classic soul cover in duet with MT Jones, an emerging young singer from Liverpool. Words can only do so much justice – these harmonies will send shivers down your spine. Mathieu Bach.
