- Summary:
- "Very happy to meet you, Mr. Shepp," Marc Ribot--New York guitarist and cohort of Tom Waits and John Zorn--respectfully states when he sees the man he describes as "one of the great saxophone innovators in free jazz." Joined by a rhythm section composed of Steve McCraven (drums) and Michel Benita (double bass), Archie Shepp and Marc Ribot collaborate for one evening in 2010 at the Jazz à Porquerolles festival. They have the blues, freedom, and political commitment in common. With them, it comes together on the standards (Monk's "Ask Me Now," Ellington's "Don't Get Around Much Anymore") as well as on "Ill Biz" with rapper Napoleon Maddox and on the emblematic "Revolution / Mama Rose," thanks to which Shepp prefigured the Last Poets' slam in 1966. It's a stunning concert, interspersed with a few words from its performers, who combine relevance and mischief. Eric Delhaye.
