- Summary:
- On November 12, 2011, the crowds at the Reithalle im Kulturforum in Offenburg, Germany, experienced a rare and electric meeting of minds. Hailing from Florida and Leipzig respectively, the worlds of Archie Shepp and Joachim Kühn were initially separated by thousands of miles. But their paths crossed along the way – first musically, when Kühn heard Shepp play on Coltrane's *New Thing At Newport* and later physically, when they played in the same band led by Edward Vesala. In this concert, just a few months after they signed a joint album – *Wo!Man* – the German maestro and the legendary American saxophonist reunite for an hour of magisterial touch and harmonious, dynamic expression. We open with close-ups of Kühn, his hands springing off the keys weightlessly and his eyes studying Shepp's intentions. When the saxophonist comes in, his instrument is foregrounded in a golden blur and Kühn can be seen in the background setting a pace that will continue for the next hour. By the end, both men are spent, burnt-out and thrilled by what they have created. Rowan Standish-Hayes.
