Summary:
Pasion Argentina is the staggering new oratorio by Leonardo Garcia Alarcon. Brought to you from the exquisite Basilique Saint-Denis, Paris, this is the Passion story, reworked, rewritten, re-imagined by Alarcon, a musician whose creativity knows no bounds. Drawing inspiration from an apocryphal text discovered in Egypt in the 1970's and working in collaboration with scholar Marco Sabbatini, Alarcon has created a truly modern version of this ancient story. From the sublime opening interlude for bandoneon this work incorporates old and new instruments and fuses styles from around the world. Whisps of Monteverdi seem to meld with whispers of Bach, as though Alarcon has breathed his own, new magic into the sounds of the past. An impressive array of soloists including Andreas Wolf (Jesus), Mariana Flores (Maria Magdalene) and Julie Roset (the Angel) form a compelling cast. Accompanied by Alarcon's Ensemble Mediterranea and joined by the Namur Chamber Choir, Choeur en Corps and students of the Aubervilliers Conservatoire, this is a mesmerising new performance. Not to be missed! Rachel Rowntree.
