Summary:
These four Argentinians, brought together in 1964 in Buenos Aires, warm the stone walls of an intimate amphitheater in Porquerolles in 2008, enchanting us with music from across the ocean. Cuarteto Cedrón is the essence of tango--a poetic discourse that flows on the rhythms of milonga and waltz. Their true singularity lies in setting poetry to music--poems that were never meant to be sung--a challenge taken up by Juan Cedrón, the group's singer and guitarist. Among the writers they honor are Raúl González Tuñón and Julio Cortázar, admired across Argentina. As they evoke the 1960s and the fight against injustice in South America--having relocated to France in the 1970s due to political persecution--Juan Cedrón shares what binds them together: "Music is our ultimate struggle." A struggle fought with poetry as a weapon, through the voices of those authors who laid the foundations of their culture. Having performed in the greatest concert halls across Europe over the past three decades, the group has come to appreciate French culture deeply. In one scene, they're treated to a wine tasting in a grand cellar. Surrounded by towering barrels, some with wood as old as 170 years, they give a small private concert--where the echoes ring and hearts are warmed. Anaïs Christidis Guillemard.
