Summary:
Qwest TV is proud to present Chicago saxophonist Isaiah Collier for one of his first Parisian dates at the famous jazz club Le Duc des Lombards. Collier's fiery, virtuosic reputation has been raging uncontrollably, largely based around The Chosen Few, a compact, energized spiritual-power outfit that he's been touring with in recent times. Even more recently Collier has expanded that core band to facilitate the material found on his latest Parallel Universe album, including vocals, guitar and trumpet. From a burning core of freely interacting spirituality, Collier is taking his repertoire out much further, to embrace soul, gospel, funk, Latin and African sounds. In this band, Collier divides his time equally between tenor saxophone and Nord keyboards, highlighting a more accessible song-based repertoire, with singer Kiela Nelson stepping in after a pair of extended opening instrumentals. Most of the band also vocalizes and plays percussion, when not concentrating on their main instruments, creating a partying, almost ritualistic groove. Collier brings in his soprano saxophone for some key climatic swooping towards set's end. This was his second set of the night at Duc des Lombards, hitting around two hours, with a virtually 30 minute jam-like encore, audience participation galore. For the original extremity of spiritual free-blowing we'll need to catch a Chosen Few gig, but this Parallel Universe repertoire is already unveiling an entire fresh zone of Collier exploration. Shining band members include guitarist Michael Damoni, heavily involved on the Chicago blues scene, and trumpeter Corey Wilkes, who's also been touring with Kahil El'Zabar's Ethnic Heritage Ensemble. Numbers of 15 minutes duration are the norm, allowing heavy escalation of grooves and solos, before Nelson enters for the album's title tune, with its abstract cityscape opening. Behind-the-scenes manager Sonny Daze also provides a rogue presence as percussionist, emcee and wild card, using a megaphone and a vintage landline to spout free-flowing narrative commentary. Some good shots from the ceiling-mounted cameras above add to the dynamism. One of several climaxes involves a battle between tenor and drums, lengthy, loud and liberated, the rest of the band looking on, stunned. Martin Longley.
