- Summary:
- Unclassifiable, eclectic, simply strange or totally innovative ... Words fail to describe the product of the collaboration of the three jazz cats of the late Jérôme Beaulieu Trio. It is under the very aegis of this confusing diversity that the phoenix MISC - diminutive of 'miscellaneous,' or literally 'diversity' in the language of Shakespeare - rose from the ashes. Behind this new baptism, a motive: to reflect the experimental turn that characterizes their latest explorations of contemporary jazz, drawing on other genres, melodies, catchy grooves, unusual percussions and other multiple samplings and effects. It is by moving away from the jazz nomenclature, with its tradition of spotlighting a virtuoso to the detriment of the other members of a group, and by constituting a group on a more typical rock model, that the trio reconnects with its vision of the community. An ideal: the microbrewery, this place between intimate and extimate, where people gather, even in the adversity of the social crises which unfortunately make the news day after day. This is what they wanted to say in their last album, Partager l'Ambulance, here repeated live in its entirety. With a progression like Alice's slow fall down the rabbit hole, the tracks flow one after the other. From Indie, electronics with Middle Eastern accents, pop rock, to recordings of everyday sounds, Jérôme Beaulieu (piano), Philippe Leduc (double bass), and William Côté (drums) navigate the nuances of contemporary jazz to its limits for a concert in all simplicity and benevolence on a stage of the Montreal International Jazz Festival, in eastern Canada.
