Summary:
Almost two decades ago Bernstein's Sex Mob made a splash with its witty, often whimsical covers of pop classics, from Prince to James Bond themes, and the band is still swimming against the tide with the best possible taste. This excellent set at the Nevers D'Jazz festival finds the original line-up playing with all the cohesion one would expect from musicians with such a lengthy shared history. Bernstein's distinctively booming slide trumpet harmonizes effectively with Briggan Krauss's heated alto saxophone while bassist Tony Scherr and drummer Kenny Wollesen form a nailed-down rhythm section that shifts skillfully between swing and groove. A brilliant segue of Gainsbourg's 'Bonnie & Clyde' and Ellington's 'Come Sunday' is a highlight of a memorable gig where humour as well as artistry are top of the agenda. **Kevin Le Gendre**.
