- Summary:
- Following in the steps of Wall of Voodoo and the Cowboy Junkies, Giant Sand is a cornerstone of the Americana scene. Propelled in the mid-1980s by the independent label New Rose (Arthur Lee, Calvin Russell ...), the Tucson band carefully cultivates its differences. Steeped in folk and rock, the house compositions (and, by extension, those of the alt-country project The Band of… Blacky Ranchette) offer an offbeat vision of the Far West and its various myths. Invited to the Parisian stage of Trabendo in 2016, the American group does not depart from this pioneering framework. Founder of the gang rock, the charismatic Howe Gelb kicks off the festivities with the hectic "Ride The Rail"; continues with the celestial "Yer Ropes"; and extends the "Beat" wanderings (a big thank you to Jack Kerouac) with the radiant "House In Order". Sometimes mineral, sometimes tender, this singing tour sums up, in the end, forty years of sessions and various collaborations (we think here of the work with Victoria Williams and Steve Wynn). A dense and literate repertoire, admirably summed up by "Tumble and Tear," an excerpt from the seminal and still very current "Valley of Rain". Vincent Caffiaux.
