In the mid-90s, when the modern version of soul music was spelled R'N'B and flirted without any drama with the best-selling albums, singer Rahsaan Patterson signed a first album after an early career as chorister and author for some great artists of the genre. Heir to the great soul voices of previous decades, Rahsaan Patterson has this rare talent for taking his time to publish his records while never giving in to the ease offered by modern technology. A regrettable constant in the world of R'N'B which is often considered, sometimes rightly, as light and sweet music quickly canned for fast profits. It is in the baroque setting of the Belasco Theater in Los Angeles that this wonderful moment of music and refinement was captured. If the atmosphere of a composition such as Burnin (which opens the concert) may seem a bit mainstream, let yourself be carried away by the "Al Greenian" counterpoint of Spend The Night, in the gospel and jazz flights of Crazy Baby and Feeling Good. Strings & keyboards, guitars, bass and full backing vocals. Space given to the musicians, extensible songs (we often border on 10 minutes), the legacy of this golden age of mid-tempo soul is perceptible with each title sung by the captivating Patterson and his guests.
