Summary:
Like The Harder They Come or Countryman, Rockers is a classic reggae movie. Released in 1978, this feature film by Theodoros Bafaloukos describes the daily life of Leroy Wallacealias Horsemouth. Recently seen in the excellent project NoiseZion, this real-life sessions drummer faces a series of life choices after his motorcycle gets stolen. While the plot is fictional, the screenplay includes legends such as Jacob Miller and Kiddus I. This production, which is partly blaxploitation cinema, allows us to delve into the mysteries of Jamaican music. The opening sequence is devoted to a coming together, a ceremony punctuated by prayers. The sound system stage (with Jack Ruby on the controllers) and its seismic bass remind us of the essential function of these evenings – the propagation of the riddims. The soundtrack is obviously fabulous: you can hear Burning Spearchanter deliver a beautiful version of "Jah No Dead" in a cappella, see soulMaytones painting a photogenic portrait of the turbulent Kingston and Gregory Isaacs as well as Peter Tosh at the peak of their artistic powers ... rock on! Vincent Caffiaux.
