Summary:
Orkster Nord may have decided to use small forces for their version of the John Passion, but this is a performance that really packs a punch. From the opening chorus, Mark Wahlberg brings energy and drive to this master-work by Johann Sebastian Bach. Composed and first performed in 1724 at the Saint Nicholas church in Leipzig, the John Passion has become one of the pillars of both the liturgical and secular calendar. Recounting the lead-up to Jesus' crucifixion it remains one of the most powerful works from the baroque period. In this performance filmed in the sumptuous Nidaros Cathedral, Trondheim, evangelist Samuel Boden and bass Havard Stensvold, in the role of Jesus, make for superbly engaging narrators of this ancient story. Orkester Nord, the Ensemble Vocal de Trondheim and soloists Christina Herresthal, Pauline Texier, Mathias Gillebo and Marten Kraal, provide a compelling, intelligent interpretation of this chef d'oeuvre.
