Summary:
Full of brassy arrangements, Swiss trombonist Samuel Blaser's latest album is a reminder of the tenuous links between jazz and the Jamaican repertoire. Ernest Ranglin, a leading figure in the genre, has experienced all the different evolutions of Jamdown, from the festive broadsides of ska to Rasta psalmodies and the sweet melodies of rocksteady. Gifted with a unique phrasing, the Caribbean guitarist has been recycling this brilliant heritage over the last few decades, thanks to an evolving musical approach. Close in many ways to his compatriot Monty Alexander, he reminds us that improvisation is above all a matter of attitude, far from the sterile labeling that is still all too common in our latitudes ... Immortalized in Paris in 2016 at the Jazz à La Villette festival, Ernest Ranglin shares this bill with an All Star ensemble. Also appearing on the pillars of the Cité De La Musique in Paris, names such as Courtney Pine, a saxophonist at the forefront of today's London jazz scene, and Tony Allen, the legendary Nigerian drummer and originator of Afrobeat alongside Fela Kuti. Structured by multiple off-beats thanks to a silky rhythm, the set unfolds its share of variations or solos, as the case may be. Such is the case with this rereading of "King Tubbys Meets Rockers Uptown", a dub by the iconic Augustus Pablo, enhanced by Ernest Ranglin's meticulous interventions. A surprise guest appearance by Senegalese singer Cheikh Lô completes the package, with his unabashedly lyrical interludes, confirming the open-mindedness of the present approach ... Vincent Caffiaux.
