- Summary:
- André Honor explores the image and symbolic representations of the figure of Our Lady of the Milk throughout the history of Western Christianity and, through a broad iconological approach, investigates how lactation was portrayed, venerated, and subsequently repressed in Western visual culture. His book offers a deep and interdisciplinary analysis of the construction and transformation of this devotion of the Virgin Mary in the Christian imagery tradition, examining how the iconography of the female lactating breast, central to Marian devotion, evolved from an early acceptance relatively well disseminated in the countries of Western Europe, to the decline of its representation from the Council of Trent. The work aims to investigate the paradox between the historical acceptance of the act of breastfeeding as a symbol of sacredness and purity, contrasted with the contemporary rejection of the visuality of breastfeeding in public spaces. The book defends the need to re-examine these cultural representations from a critical and emancipating perspective, proposing that the recognition of the plurality of meanings of the lactating breast - maternal, erotic, sacral and social - is an important step to demystify contemporary taboos and rescue female autonomy over her body
