- Summary:
- The figure of the countrymen arises from the political project of a cultural elite committed to the modernization of São Paulo and the construction of a prominent place for the state in relation to the other units of the federation. The alignment with modern international art trends in the 19th century, realism and naturalism, makes the Caipira culture the São Paulo version of the rural workers (cowboys, farmers, hillbillies, etc.) as a founding social type of Brazilian culture from the perspective of different countries. The exhibition goes through the construction of this character, the representation of the rural environment and the actions that characterize them. The catalogue brings together close to 70 works, by 35 artists, and makes a historical analysis of the construction of the figure of the country boy in art. Curated by Yuri Quevedo, the exhibition exhibits works such as "Caipira picando fumo" (1893) e "Amolação interrompida" (1894) - which turns 130 in 2024 - both by one of the most important Brazilian artists of the 19th century, Almeida Júnior, as well as works by the Italians Carlo de Servi and Antonio Ferrigno and the Catalan Lluis Graner - who was a work companion of the famous architect, Antoni Gaudí.
