Summary:
English summary Petrus van Galen's 1830 dissertation from his doctoral research at Utrecht University is a forgotten chapter in the history of earth gravity research. Translated from Latin into Dutch, this dissertation gives us an insight into the scientific discoveries around the time of his publication. In his dissertation, Petrus van Galen gives a complete picture of all the pendulum measurements that had been made with regard to determining the shape of the earth. These unique measurements were made by various explorers and scientists, from northern Russia to the Tierra del Fuego archipelago in the far south of South America, all to get a better picture of the flattening of our planet. In his second chapter, Van Galen presents in a mathematical account how a pendulum measurement should be corrected to determine gravity as accurately as possible, building further on Christiaan Huygens' theory. In doing so, he also selects the equipment and experiments that are precise enough to determine the shape. In his final chapter, he elaborates the mathematical theory of how the shape of the earth can be determined by the various gravity measurements. He uses the just-conceived least squares method to arrive at a value for the oblateness of 1/286.23. This value is close to the current calculated value, an extraordinary achievement some two hundred years ago. This book thus presents a new piece of the puzzle in the fascinating history of Dutch science.
