• "This book examines the question of Jewish identity in and around Egypt in the Middle Ages based on the analysis of cases where community boundaries were corssed by means of conversion. The book discusses many cases of Jews who converted to other religions, mainly to Islam, and of non-Jewish enslaved men and women who were owned by Jewish masters and mistresses, whose manumission was in fact their conversion, thus giving them an entry ticket into the Jewish community in which they lived. Utilizing sources of various types, the book tries to trace the reasons for and circumstances of these conversions: the fate of converts - both converts to Judaism and Jews who converted to other religions; the reaction of families and community members to religious conversions; and th elasting effect of conversions on tthe identity of descendants and family members of the converts even in the second and third generation afterwards." -- From the abstract (page ix)
