First page of text chromolithographed. Title page and remaining text pages ruled in gold with gold border element beside left rule. Title printed in gold, red, and black. Gold initials, line-fillers, and tailpieces decorate pages throughout.
Local Notes:
Black papier mâché boards in open trellis design include a brown medallion with a relief silhouette of Shakespeare on the left board and entwined initials W and S with laurel leaves above and below on a brown medallion on the right board. Red background under the trellis. Leather spine with title. Gold-tooled cover edges and turn-ins; red endpapers. All edges gilt. One of eight Victorian titles bound in black papier mâché by commercial firms (see R. McLean, Victorian book design, page 210).
Furness copy has bookseller's notes in pencil on blank leaf preceding title leaf.
Furness copy purchased for the Penn Libraries in 2025 from Christian White Rare Books.
Furness copy has manuscript inscription ("Eustace Charlton from his friend A.B.H.") on blank leaf preceding title leaf.
