- In this unblushing effort at self-promotion, the author, a clairvoyant diagnostician and purveyor of medicines, provides an entertaining account of medical hucksterism during an itinerant practice that took him through the New England states as far as Minnesota. Thompson claims to be able to "reveal disease at the sight of the patient", and how to know immediately "all of their symptoms and every bad feeling as well as the cause of their sickness". (p.14) Thompson's therapeutic system consists of vegetable based medicines of his own manufacture that keep the biliary duct open.
