In the first of her twenty-five letters Beecher expresses anxieties reflective of a nation in the midst of unpredictable economic, social and religious change. To remedy the national decline is the purpose of Beecher's Letters, which is divided into five parts: Organs of the human body, laws of health, abuses of the bodily organs, evils resulting from such abuses and remedies for these evils.
