Upon completing his medical studies at Edinburgh, Buchan settled in Yorkshire where in 1759 he was appointed medical officer to the recently opened Foundling Hospital at Ackworth. It was there he wrote his M.D. thesis (De infantum vita conservanda) and acquired his interest and skill in treating the diseases of women and children displayed in both the 'Advice to Mothers' and the 'Domestic Medicine'.

William Buchan (1729-1805) was the first writer in English to combine in one book recipes for home treatment with general advice about diet, life style, and how to live longer.
