Summary:

This edition shows a journey through five centuries of angelic iconography and its great symbolism in Europe and the New World, as well as the ambivalence between the sacred angel and the profane. The catalogue comprises 200 works (painting, sculpture and engraving) from the MUNAL's collection, as well as from 38 public and private institutions and collections. The collections of three museums come together to exhibit some of the symbolic elements that articulated the thought and devotion to angels in New Spain. With the Museo Nacional de Arte in Mexico City as the first venue, this exhibition has been designed to reach other audiences throughout Mexico. Magnificent oil paintings by colonial artists Andrés de Concha, Baltasar de Echave Orio, Luis Juárez, Antonio Rodríguez, Juan Rodríguez Juárez, Diego de Borgraf, Cristóbal de Villalpando, José de Ibarra and Miguel Cabrera, among many others, orchestrate the voices and sensibilities that resorted to the symbol presence of angels as an expression and aesthetic category.
