Summary:

It is striking that in the heat of the controversy that confronted Sigüenza y Góngora, defender of the new sidereal mechanism, against the providentialist Eusebio Kino, an original Baroque dome was painted by Cristóbal de Villalpando in the cathedral of Puebla that does not limit itself to representing one of the traditional Catholic allegories about Heaven but weaves a graphic polyphony that integrates various cosmic explanations. It thus generates a "tertium datur" with respect to the intransigent opposition of the opposing scientists, which goes beyond modern univocism as much as it rises up in the world, with his great creativity, on the repetitive narrowness of old authorities and traditions. Breaking down the hermeneutical context of each of the themes that articulate this cosmogram, this work takes up, in greater depth, the iconographic research of this painting that its author carried out in 2009 as a master's thesis in art history.
