Summary:
The Jewish population of the Dąbrowa Basin, along with Silesia and western Małopolska, which were annexed by the Third Reich, existed for a longer time than other areas in something like open ghettos. The situation changed in late 1941. The German administration concentrated the Jewish population in parts of the cities of Będzin, Czeladź, Dąbrowa Gornica, Sosnowiec, and Strzemieszyce, where they were cut off from the world. This process was completed in the first half of 1943. Between May 1942-August 1943, most of the Jewish inhabitants of the Basin were deported to Auschwitz. Ca. 88% of them were killed in the gas chambers. In the first half of 1944, several hundred Jews remained in the Dąbrowa Basin in special camps, to clean up the grounds of the former ghettos. Pp. 19-261 present a history of these events. The rest of the book contains excerpts of lists of Jews from Będzin and Sosnowiec who were transferred to the closed ghettos in 1942-43, and fragmentary lists of Jews who were deported to Auschwitz; texts and facsimiles of documents of the German administration; and a few eyewitness accounts. (From the Bibliography of the Vidal Sassoon International Center for the Study of Antisemitism - The Hebrew University of Jerusalem).
