- Summary:
- "For a long time, embarking on a merchant ship was the only way to reach distant lands, and traveling in this way was not undertaken for pleasure. This may explain the lack of detail in travelers' accounts about the daily realities of life on board. It was not until the advent of the great ocean liners and their golden age, in the interwar period, that sea crossings, which had become comfortable (at least for the wealthiest passengers), could be considered as pleasure trips - to the point of becoming, with these veritable floating cities that are the most recent cruise ships, a form of playground for the privileged middle classes. Is it then to reconnect with the voyages of yesteryear, the slowness of interminable sea crossings and the experience of a certain boredom, at the antipodes of what cruise passengers enjoy, that we have seen, since the 1990s, a craze for cargo ship voyages? With the appearance of tourist operators putting lovers of long-distance voyages in touch with merchant navy shipping companies, this type of voyage, without having become totally commonplace, attracts new followers every year. Specialized travel agencies now offer in their catalogs all sorts of distant maritime connections and use clever advertising rhetoric by presenting cargo ship voyages as a form of anti-tourism, reserved for lovers of the sea, thus flattering the desire for distinction of those who want to stand out from the mass of cruise passengers." -- https://www.lettresmodernesminard.org/voyages-contemporains.html (accessed, 12/09/2024).
