Summary:
"Russian-German painter Alexej Jawlensky (1864-1941) found his own artistic voice late in life. He was part of the revitalisation of painting in the early 20th century, developing his Expressionist style through exchanges with the Fauves in Paris as well as peers in Germany, including friends in and around Der Blauwe Reiter. After the outbreak of World War I, Jawlensky and his partner Marianne Werefkin fled to Switzerland. In Saint-Prex, he repeatedly painted the same view from their house in the Variations series, discovering his own artistic project centred on repitition and serialitiy. Until arthritis ended his abiliby to paint, Jawlensky explored colour, religious iconography and portraiture in his masterful serial paintings. He called his last series of works Meditations, which was modest in format, yet sensational."--Back cover.
