Summary:
Mariano Arana (Uruguay 1933-1923), in addition to being a lifelong art collector, was an architect and politician, (former Minister of Housing, Spatial Planning and Environment of Uruguay and former mayor of Montevideo (1995-2005) and a Senator). Although he went to exhibitions and was friends with artists, nothing was known about this facet as an art collector. The exhibition presents the art work by many prominent 20th century artists active in Uruguay such as Rafael Barradas, Pedro Figari, Joaquin Torres García, Pedro Blanes Viale, Alfredo De Simone, and Guillermo Fernández, as well as from some members of El Taller Torres-García (TTG) like José Gurvich, Julio Alpuy, Gonzalo Fonseca, Francisco Matto, among many others. "Mariano's personal collection travels through Uruguayan art from the thirties to the present day and is representative of multiple trends, schools and "-isms". It is made up of more than 120 works by artists belonging to various generations. They are very different works in concepts, techniques, dimensions, periods. In some way, they synthesize an inclusive view of creation in Uruguay" --translated from page 12.
