Summary:
An English literature student, Johnny, returns to Alba, his home in Northern Italy shortly after the Italian government signs the armistice with the Allied troops on September 8, 1943, only to find it has been ravaged by the Germans and the local Fascists. Johnny joins several anti-Fascists resistance groups and struggles to come to terms with partisan beliefs and the violence of the war.
