- Biography/History:
- John Francis Maher was born in County Waterford, Ireland, on May 5, 1849. A cold contracted at the age of seven almost completely deprived him of his eyesight. At fifteen he entered the Pennsylvania Institution for the Instruction of the Blind. He received a Bachelor of Science in 1874, and a Master of Science in 1877, both from the University of Pennsylvania. After working for several years as a private tutor, he decided to study law and graduated with a Bachelor of Laws, also from the University of Pennsylvania, in 1891. In 1894, Mr. Maher was appointed Examiner in Latin of candidates for admission to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania. He was one of the originators of the Freelander Union, a beneficial society for the blind, serving as President and later Treasurer.
