Biography/History:
John Saunderson is a consultant medical physicist, an accredited Radiation Protection Adviser, Radioactive Waste Adviser, Medical Physics Expert, Clinical Scientist and Consultant Scientist. John is a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine. He has previously chaired the IPEM Radiation Protection Special Interest Group, and is currently an Association of Clinical Scientists' assessor, and external adviser for the IPEM Clinical Scientist Guided Training Scheme. Mohamed Metwaly, PhD, FIPEM, is a lead consultant clinical scientist and registered medical physics expert (MPE) in the RPA2000 record (UK). He is the head of the Dosimetry and Imaging Quality Assurance Service (radiotherapy physics) at the United Lincolnshire Hospitals NHS Trust. He is the editor-in-chief of the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM) Report Series. Since 2021, he has been the IPEM representative of EFOMP.
Summary:
This is the second edition of the Medical and Dental Guidance Notes (MDGN), created by an IPEM working group. Following publication of the first edition in 2002, this edition addresses the safe use of ionising radiations (e.g., radioactive substances, x-rays, protons, neutrons, and electron beams) in the UK but does not address lasers, MRI, ultrasound, ultraviolet, or other non-ionising radiations. These notes include general best practices of the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations (IR(ME)R) 2017, but they do not repeat or interpret legal requirements and guidance in the legislation. Topics covered include safe diagnostic x-ray procedures, radiotherapy, nuclear medicine, positron emission tomography, and radioactive substance contingency planning. Following the instructions is optional but should be enough to comply with the law. Legally responsible parties should familiarise themselves with the legislation through this means. Part of IPEM-IOP Series in Physics and Engineering in Medicine and Biology.
