Summary:
In the Renaissance, which was the influence of the commentaries offered by Greek and Roman authors on the psychagogic power of ancient art, sculptures and paintings? This book attempts to answer this question by looking at the most significant intertextuality mechanisms that underlie the ekphrastic texts. Specifically, the investigation focuses on sixteenth-century prose and poetry devoted to the sculptural group of the Laocoon: by studying the intertextual connections of these writings particularly with commonly held beliefs and descriptive forms of Greco-Roman ekphrasis, the monograph sheds light on the forms of verbal transmission of a millenary 'culture of seeing'. -- Publisher summary.
