Summary:
This guide discusses how to facilitate focus groups designed to support and empower marginalized participant populations. We briefly note historical contexts that shape marginalized populations' distrust of researchers and their studies. Then, drawing upon examples from focus groups that we have conducted, we consider the "why" and "how" of conducting focus groups, along with researchers' ethical responsibilities of conducting focus groups with marginalized populations. We offer concrete examples and suggestions regarding how researchers might consider and address why focus groups are necessary, who will participate, and how participants will be asked to participate--and how those considerations relate to supporting and empowering marginalized participants.
