- Summary:
- The archaeological work in the Recinto Sagrado de México Tenochtitlan have made it possible to recover a large number of lapidary objects deposited in more than two hundred offerings, most of them exhumed from 1978 onwards with the Project Templo Mayor. In the case of the lapidary, it is possible to appreciate a great diversity of geographical and cultural origins, even beyond the imperial confines; as well as pieces of most of the main Mesoamerican styles, which were deposited as relics or precious goods due to their exotic, scarce, distant or ancient character. This publication presents the results of 20 years of studies on the lapidary of the Templo Mayor, such as the various precious stones, known as tlaçotetl in náhuatl, that were used to make badges of prestige and power, the work instruments used in their manufacture, the diversity of objects over time, as well as the different traditions and styles identifieds. Also included is the section "Los Niños de las Piedras Preciosas", where the lapidary trade among the Nahuas is addressed, the detailed knowledge they had about the different mineral rocks that they transformed into sacred or luxury objects, the learning of this work and the art of lapidary or tlateccáyotl, the qualities of the Toltec artisans and the work in the palace workshops, as well as the interactions between the lapidary artisans with the Tlaiximatime, the Pochteca and the Tlameme.
