- Curator and restorer María Isabel Álvarez Plata rescues the life and fundamental work of painter Alfredo La Placa Subieta (Potosí, 1929-La Paz, 2016), considered the precursor of abstract art in Bolivia. This self-taught artist (who first studied medicine and then did free art workshops), had a poetic dimension, which is revealed not only in his art, but also in the titles he chooses to baptize his works (paintings, poems, objects, prints, collages and drawings). "To write about La Placa was to enter a labyrinth, possibly the labyrinth that he himself built in stone in the courtyard of the Solar de Rita, on the shores of Lake Titicaca. Alfredo is a difficult artist to pigeonhole; he was always attentive to changes, to experiment with the avant-garde of the 20th century, mainly the most outstanding art movements, such as Dadaism, Surrealism and the Bauhaus, as he manifests in his work." --translated from page 13.
