- Summary:
- In this work, noted historian Antonio Rubial García (Mexico City, 1949) analyzes the birth and development of the religious sanctuaries of New Spain and the role played by social networks, both religious and civil, in their configuration. Then, through the study of the most significant sanctuaries of the time, the author shows us how the promotion of the cult of miraculous images was a key phenomenon in the formation of the social and political structures of New Spain, and in the construction of unifying identities that, even today, continue to serve as pillars of modern Mexico. "While the cult of the saints was limited by the declarations of the Sacred Congregation of Rites in Rome (which forbade devotion to persons not canonized by the Church), the cult of miraculous images, on the other hand, had to be authorized only by the local bishop in accordance with the legislation of the Council of Trent".
