- Summary:
- Lourdes Almeida (México, 1952), a renowned contemporary Mexican photographer, set out to create a genealogy of female photographers born between 1790 and 1920. This arduous task led her to research and compile the names, images and life stories of the women who have been protagonists, since the origins of this invention. In such a process, a discovery emerged that is not surprising: many female photographers were erased, ignored, and some are on the verge of being forgotten. To publicize the photographic work produced by these pioneers, the proposal of Zurciendo la Historia (darning history) was born. As in sewing, a women's work par excellence, Lourdes Almeida has been darning with perseverance and patience, recovering names and photographs taken by women, from the 19th century to the dawn of the 20th century. Their presence was found and acknowledged in various sources: family albums, studio photographs, and census records and business directories of their time. She mends historical holes with equal dedication to save from oblivion female photographers of whom only an image or a written reference is preserved. She also rescues the work of women whose work and labor was attributed to their male husbands or male relatives. All of them are named to vindicate their contributions and their unique view of the world. This extraordinary compilation presents us with a careful curation of photographs and biographies, which allows us to get to know the photographers in their professional and personal facets. There were women who were mothers, housewives and, at the same time, responsible for running the family business. There were those who broke the conventions and restrictions of their time, to develop in a profession considered masculine and, therefore, dominated by men. Likewise, Lourdes' curiosity has led her to inquire into recent research, generally carried out by historians and photographers, who have discovered other personalities that deserve to be included in this chronicle. The pioneers grew and developed along with photography. Lourdes used her experience and her vision as a photographer to organize them thematically according to the genre in which they had their most relevant activity, which might not coincide with the rigor of historians, but gives us a unique perspective from the feminine and the artistic. a compilation of pioneering female photographers from the 19th and early 20th centuries from around the world. Most of them erased from the history of photography. This project was born from a seminar of the same name that was taught online during the pandemic through the Active School of Photography, Querétaro campus. It is a project that is divided in a thematic order by photographic genres in which the photographers developed their activity, many of them ventured into several genres, the selection is made by the author. What she considered best represents them. It is a reference book, each photographer has a page with her portrait, a short biography, and images of her authorship. There are some cases where we were unable to obtain all the information we would have wanted and in others very little information, as we did not want to leave out these authors we included them in an appendix for each genre. Each of the images that appear in the publication has a truthful basis due to the field from which they come, such as a museum, a book, or a known collection. The book "Zurciendo la historia" contributes to vindicating and disseminating the role of women in the evolution of photography.
