- Summary:
- "This book is designed to: (a) present self-talk theory broadly to enhance the strength and breadth of the theoretical foundation of the field, (b) present valid and reliable measurement approaches to guide the study of self-talk in sport, and (c) offer practical applications that emerge from the self-talk literature. It is divided into three sections. The first section sets up the theoretical foundation for exploring sport self-talk. The second section addresses self-talk measurement with a focus on the validity crisis in self-talk research. It describes real-time data collection measurement tools in detail. These real-time measures avoid the construct validity problems and limitations of retrospective self-talk questionnaires and can lead to the collection of accurate data that supports expansion of the self-talk body of scientific knowledge that the quality of self-talk interventions and application. The third and final section highlights diverse theoretical frameworks that integrate approaches from several related fields and perspectives to advance innovative ideas related to the application of self-talk in sport. The book includes diverse perspectives within an overarching framework of self-talk and sport performance. It moves on to one of the greatest challenges in the sport self-talk literature, the crisis of validity of self-talk measurement by providing direction and examples of valid and reliable tools for sport self-talk research. The book concludes by bringing together authors from diverse theoretical backgrounds and fields, breaking down silos, and providing a rich opportunity for readers to enrich their understanding of ways in which self-talk can be applied in sport settings.
