Summary:

This collection about the Vietnamese consists of 84 documents, 33 in English and 51 translations from the French, that cover all three main areas culturally recognized by the Vietnamese as the Northern (Bac Bo), Central (Trung Bo), and Southern (Nam Bo) regions, with Hanoi, Hue, and Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), serving as the main cities of each of the three regions. The cultural data are diverse, but generally the best overall coverage of Vietnamese ethnography will be found in Gourou, Huard, Cima, and supplemented with brief summaries in Landes and in Luro. Other major ethnographic topics discussed include community studies, gender studies with the emphasis on women's roles and status in Vietnamese society, law and legal norms, economics, and features of Vietnamese religion. Information on the French colonial period in Vietnam is given specific attention in Thompson, Bonhomme, Dumarest, and Rouilly. Medicine and medical care are topics discussed in: Jeanselme, Gammeltoft, and Ladinsky. Discussions on social change are given special attention by Dang, Hickey, Kleinen, Luong, and Kerkvliet. Data on politics and political development are found in Hammer, Michaud, and Cima.
