Summary:

Drawing is a visual communication method used to express imagination, thoughts, and feelings. This visual method can unveil hidden meanings about participants' decisions, both actions and inactions. It can also provide unintended ideas or concepts that lead to further research exploration. Using drawings as a method of data collection requires careful consideration of ethical issues, the practicalities of the research and the value of participants' cocreation for the study. This article discusses drawings from research that explore how social enterprise directors and founders respond to and adapt to the UK cost-of-living crisis. Participant-made drawings uncovered philosophical orientations that influence strategic responses to the cost-of-living crisis. The formal structure of the drawing was coupled with an exploratory (or nonsystematic) observation method. This design was effectively implemented using POD, a tool for researchers to Plan for drawings, Observe what is drawn and who is involved, and Dig deep into the drawing elicitation. We observed four phases of data elicitation: contextualizing, focusing, exemplifying, and reflecting.
