- Summary:
- In fall 2019, I had the pleasure of conducting research with my daughter's prekindergarten class. While the research was initially meant to explore the ways the class as a whole responded to and engaged with West African picturebooks and artifacts, it became clear over the course of my three classroom visits that my daughter's responses were different from those of her classmates and warranted further exploration. In order to understand her responses to being a participant in her own mother's research project, I conducted a reflective interview with my daughter in which I used emergent listening to try to understand her responses to my original project. This case explores the ways emergent listening can be used to understand children's perspectives better and how it can reframe the ways we think about research with our own children. Readers will learn the importance of assent and emergent listening when working with children.
